MICROSOFT AI + WALMART

MICROSOFT + PRODUCT DESIGN
Overview
MICROSOFT AND WALMART JOIN FORCES

After Microsoft and Walmart annouced they were partnering, the business unit I was in at Microsoft, Business AI, was tasked with coming up with ideas how to create frictionless ways for customers and managers using AI and BI.

Collaborating with the product team, we came up with an idea to have scanners attached to shopping carts so customers could easily scan products as they go.

IN-STORE CART
SHOPPING CART SCANNER

Working with a 3D artist, we designed an in-store scanner attached to a shopping cart and had a few fabricated to actually attach to shopping carts.

Many different versions were designed before being fabricated. We also included GPS and voice control for accessibility purposes.

Once the customer has logged into their account in the Walmart app on their phone, and it's paired with their shopping cart, they are ready to shop.

CHECK OUT
VERIFY ITEMS IN CART

Once the customer is ready to check out, an in-store checker with an iPad or Surface can verify the items scanned and in the customer's cart via an in-store app we called "Checkout Pro".

My design team created the app so the in-store checker can verify multiple customers at a time for when the store is busy.

IN-STORE TOOLS
THE POWER OF AI + BI

My design team also created a PowerBI experience with data insights, rin-store revenue, special reports, as well as in-store AI hotspots and recommendations on what end caps are selling better than others. If an end cap isn't generating the kind of revenue it should, Microsoft's AI would recommended different products that could sell through better than others. We also had a planogram for the entire store with the same insights into success and improvement recommendations.

My team designed the entire UI for the "CheckoutPro," "PowerBI" and phone app screens for this partnership. The project was left with Microsoft and Walmart discussing how to change all of Walmart's IT infrastructure over to Azure.
